Aisha Mike

"Aisha Mike gets in your skin, floats through your bloodstream and inspires your mind/soul to be free. Vibrations of Minnie Riperton is what she reminds me of. A special spirit in a world where spirit is needed."

– Abiodun Oyewole of The Last Poets

Singer/songwriter Aisha Mike approaches music with the unwavering intensity of timelessness. Globally, you know her voice from Talib Kweli's "Talk to You (Lil Darlin)" on Quality or his "Peace of Mind" 12" or from Dead Prez's "W-4" (billed as Aisha Mic) but her own sound is a euphoria of soul and electronica. She has also worked with Ben Taylor, John Legend, Luther Vandross, Mos Def, Sly & Robbie, Carly Simon, Good Charlotte, Hootie and the Blowfish, Bilal, Brand Nubian, the Marley Family, Burning Spear, and dance kings Roger Sanchez and Armand van Helden. Trained in classical, jazz, funk and gospel Ms. Mike has laid angelic background vocals on everything from hip-hop to reggae and techno projects. You may also have seen her on B.E.T.s 106th & Park, Today and Good Morning America among others.

In person, Ms. Mike is always radiating and positive. The child of two very creative parents, music and art were integral to her upbringing and she sang before she could clearly enunciate. Aisha's father, a Brooklynite with southern roots is a prominent theatre director and playwright in international circles. Her mother, of Jamaican and Chinese heritage began singing, acting and modeling when she arrived in New York from Kingston in her teens. Aisha also models. But education was a priority growing up. Aisha went to private schools, trained as a classical soprano soloist and completed a BA in Film Studies before moving to Lagos to complete a master’s dissertation on Yoruba art. Her 2004 album Find the Love is composed in part by prominent Brazilian Jazz Composer Ze Luis (www.zeluis.com) and produced by pianist Kwame Viapree, winner of the ASCAP/Heineken Songwriter Award. Aisha writes all of her own songs and is currently working on an acoustic EP as well as a full-length soultronica album for release next year.
