Hamilton Musical: Innovating History

Feb 29, 2016

If you thought it was hard to get tickets to Hamilton before, you’re in for a rude awakening. As New Yorkers and avid theatre-goers know, this Broadway blockbuster has been the talk of the theatre scene ever since it started its run. This past week, the cast of Hamilton shook the Grammy’s with a surprise performance of their opening number, “Alexander Hamilton.” The rap number was full of energy and full-out passion from each member of its ensemble cast. As lyricist/composer/lead character Alexander Hamilton, Lin Manuel-Miranda did not fail to impress with his down to earth, yet compelling stage presence. The audience was treated to an extra surprise when Miranda rapped his acceptance speech for the Best Musical Theatre Album Award. This award is not usually televised, but in this case an exception was made as audiences went crazy for the star.

Miranda has proven again and again his mastery of rap music and words. And in doing so he has arguably changed the face of musical theatre. Given the production’s continuously sold out performances, it is safe to say its popularity is set in stone. People are loving this new take not only on history, but on musical theatre as well. Lin Manuel-Miranda has truly set the bar high for aspiring musical theatre artists. Will Miranda’s productions expand the musical styles seen on Broadway forever? What is the future of musical theatre as an art?
